During 1947 when India became standalone, the Madras Administration became Madras State, covering the present day Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Canara district of Karnataka, and sections of Kerala. The state was afterward come apart along linguistic outlines. In 1969, Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu, meaning Country of Tamil and is the eleventh chief state in India.
