Puducherry was former known as Pondicherry is a union territory of India. This was formed a French outpost consisting of four non-flanking communes or regions, and named after the largest region Pondicherry. Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam were the four non-adjoining cooperatives of Puducherry. The terrain was formally known as Pondicherry until 2006 when it was renamed Puducherry. Pondicherry is also considered an educational nudeus of southern India with many institutes of technology, universities, medical and engineering colleges, dental colleges, law colleges, agricultural colleges, arts and science colleges, and polytechnic colleges functioning within its territory. Pondicherry and Karaikal are both close societies of Tamil Nadu.
